Pet Orthopedic Surgeries

Our orthopedic surgery offerings include, but are not limited to:

Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Repair

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury or disease mimics the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries in people. It normally presents as minimally to non-weight bearing lameness to either one or both hind limbs in dogs or cats.

The injury causes pain and instability of the affected stifle (knee), swelling, as well as predisposition to arthritis. It can be an acute injury or developed over time. If surgery is deemed to be necessary for correction, we offer three procedures based on case selection and best potential outcome.

CCL Repair Extracapsular (Lateral Suture)

In these cases, a monofilament line is anchored around the fabella (small accessory bone on the caudal aspect of the femur) and the tibial crest. Tension is adjusted to provide stability. This procedure is done outside of the joint capsule. This is typically reserved for small patients where we are avoiding entering the joint capsule.

Patellar Luxation Repair
Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap (patella) slips out of its normal groove, most commonly toward the inside of the leg (medial luxation). This condition can cause discomfort, intermittent lameness, or even permanent joint damage if left untreated. The condition is given a grade of 1–4, and it is recommended that surgery be performed at a grade 1 or 2 before permanent damage is done to the joint or surrounding structures.

Our surgical approach to correcting medial patellar luxation (MPL) involves deepening the femoral groove and realigning the soft tissues and bone to maintain the patella's position during movement. This restores proper joint function and helps prevent future dislocation. Patellar luxation is most common in small breeds, but can occur in dogs of all sizes.

Symptoms of patellar luxation:
  • Skipping or “bunny hopping” while walking or running
  • Sudden leg stiffness or limping
  • Audible clicking from the knee joint
  • Difficulty standing or bearing weight on one leg
Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)
FHO surgery is ideal for small to medium-sized pets suffering from hip injuries or degeneration. By removing the femoral head, this procedure reduces pain and allows your pet to regain functional mobility through a false joint.

Used for conditions such as:
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Femoral head fractures/luxation
  • Chronic arthritis
Fracture Repair
Fractures can result from trauma, falls, or accidents. Our team performs these surgical procedures focusing on femoral, pelvic, tibial, humeral, metacarpal, and metatarsal repairs using the latest techniques including pins and external fixators as needed for each individual case. Fracture repairs are case dependent.

Common fractures treated:
  • Femur, tibia, radius, humerus
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Growth plate injuries in young pets
Limb Amputation

When a limb is severely injured, infected, or affected by cancer, amputation may be the best option for pain relief and quality of life. Pets are incredibly resilient, and most adjust quickly to three-legged mobility with the right care and support.

OrthoSta Procedure

This procedure is available for patients up to 100 lbs. Pilot holes are drilled at isometric points in the distal femur and proximal tibia. A woven implant is passed through the holes and anchored to provide stability. This procedure allows for exploration of the joint capsule to assess all pathology including meniscal tears. Any other pathology is addressed at this time.

Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP)

This procedure is available for medium to giant breed dogs. MMPs involve placing a titanium foam wedge into the proximal aspect of the tibia to stabilize the stifle. The implant is permanent as the bone grows back through the implant providing stabilization. The joint capsule can also be evaluated during this procedure, addressing and pathology.
